The documentation says that the default location for Chef on Linux is /opt/chef. However, the RPM installer uses /opt/.chef for running the Chef upgrade process. On systems that use LVM to restrict bloating of the /opt file system it bloats the filesystem causing the installation to fail. The temporary structure should be housed under /opt/chef not /opt.
