Chef Ideas

We believe that the best way to build software is to do it in close collaboration with the people who use it. We invite you to submit your ideas using the form below. Please be sure to include the problem for which you are solving and the benefits of implementing the idea.

We do our best to implement as many Ideas as we can. Our Product team will evaluate all submitted ideas in a timely manner and will disposition each into one of the following categories: will integrate into the product roadmap, further research is needed, unlikely to implement.

Thanks for collaborating with us!

Create a method for setting per-member configuration values

When building and running an application like Apache Kafka, each member of the Kafka cluster must have a unique numerical value as their broker ID.

It would be nice to be able to generate and assign a broker ID that is stored in the supervisor ring, but unique per host.

Idea being, the "kafka" service has a value of "brokerid" which would contain either the last value used or 1+last value and then each member of the service group has a unique "brokerid" which has a unique value starting a 0 and incrementing by 1 each time a new member joins.
