Chef Ideas

We believe that the best way to build software is to do it in close collaboration with the people who use it. We invite you to submit your ideas using the form below. Please be sure to include the problem for which you are solving and the benefits of implementing the idea.

We do our best to implement as many Ideas as we can. Our Product team will evaluate all submitted ideas in a timely manner and will disposition each into one of the following categories: will integrate into the product roadmap, further research is needed, unlikely to implement.

Thanks for collaborating with us!

Infrastructure filter by IP address

We are often asked to troubleshoot an issue and are given only the IP address, since that is how end users connect to the server. It would be really nice to search in Automate by IP instead of having to do a separate lookup to get the node name.

I think it would be useful for all day-to-day operations. IP address is the one attribute that we can use to reliably identify a server.

In general, I would love to see the generic functionality of `knife search` in Automate - we should be able to search on any attribute name and any attribute value. As it is, it's very limited and doesn't allow us to completely eliminate our day-to-day dependencies on knife.

Thanks for raising this idea. Curious to understand - is it required only during debugging or do you see it's utility in day to day operations too?

Nevertheless, I am adding it to the backlog and associating with infrastructure filter improvements.
